We’re just a few days away from the National Association of Musical Merchants(NAMM) tradeshow, a bi-annual expo for the best new musical instruments and production tools. It’s like Christmas for the music industry and many companies like to time their new product releases with the tradeshow.
But that doesn’t make this announcement from Roland any less surprising, or downright exciting: the company is resurrecting the legendary TR-808 analog drum machine in a new model called TR-08 AIRA.
What can we expect from AIRA? It’s hard to say, since Roland hasn’t released many details. No doubt, this will all be a little clearer after NAMM, but it looks like AIRA is going to incorporate the analog sound that made the 808 a modern classic but with updated technology for improved workflow in today’s digital production environments. We think….
That has been the trend with more recent drum machines, a forced necessity to compete with the powerful world of VSTs. Of course, AIRA will probably offer something that you can’t get in a software package.
Roland is keeping this one tightly under wraps, and the video announcing the release of AIRA is notably lacking in details. We barely get to see the instrument. But you can’t help but wonder if AIRA is going to have the impact of the 808.
